Shirley Green, PhD, is a respected historian, teacher, and author dedicated to exploring the profound impact of Revolutionary Black figures throughout history. Her writings illuminate the contributions and legacies of influential Black freeborn soldiers during the Revolutionary War. 

As the Director of the Toledo Police Museum, her research also examines the history of policing in northwest Ohio with an emphasis on Black policing and the officers who served as police officers.

Meet Dr. Shirley Green

Shirley Green, PhD, received her Bachelor's and Master’s Degrees at the University of Toledo. And received her PhD in History from Bowling Green State University in 2011. She is currently an Adjunct Professor of History at the University of Toledo in Toledo, OH and Bowling Green State University in Bowling Green, OH.  With a rich academic background and a passion for storytelling, Dr. Green brings to life the narratives that have shaped our world.Through her compelling writings, she illuminates the contributions and legacies of influential Blacks offering fresh perspectives and insights.

 

Shirley L. (Swan) Green was born and raised in Toledo, OH. She is the daughter of Toledo native Marshall O. Swan and Sarah A. (Franklin) Swan, a native of Lynn, Massachusetts. She grew up in the North Toledo community of “Out Stickney” and attended Spring Elementary School and Notre Dame Academy High School for Girls. She followed in her father’s footsteps, a well-known and well-respected police investigator and became a Toledo Police Officer—rising to the rank of Lieutenant and serving for twenty-six years. She also served with other family members, Uncles Irving Swan and Joe Carnes, and cousins Rob Malone and Kathy Gray. She is the mother of one son, Michael, Jr. and the grandmother to six grandchildren, Michael, III, Mylake, Xakar, Kimberly, Naya, and Isaiah.
